SOUTHWEST- ADVENTURE DAY IN THE TATACOA DESERT

Tatacoa Desert, Colombia

Duration: 8-9 hours from Villavieja.

This day of adventure in the Tatacoa Desert begins in the morning in Villavieja where we will take a tuk-tuk up to the entrance of the Desert. From there we will start a horseback ride of approximately 2 hours during which we can admire the landscapes of this tropical dry forest and learn about the different species of vegetation of the place. We continue to the mineral water pool where we´ll be able to enjoy a relaxing bath in the middle of this arid landscape.

Then we will return to Villavieja to have lunch and rest a bit before heading out to explore the Magdalena River by boat accompanied by a fisherman from the region who will teach us some of his fishing secrets. After the boat ride, we will walk through the gray and ocher parts of the Desert and wait for the sunset on the Rainbow path. We will pass by the Cardón - Cuzco part, one of the most representative landscapes, due to its geomorphology, in which we will appreciate the formations originated by water and wind and visit the Cathedrals, The Tower, The Wishing Tree, and The Labyrinths formations.
At nightfall, we are invited to enjoy a glass of cactus wine at the Cuzco viewpoint while observing the impressive starry sky of the Desert.

Optional

  • Visit the Astronomical Observatory: USD 14

Due to its geographical conditions, the sky of the Tatacoa Desert is usually very clear most of the year, which together with the absence of light pollution and its proximity to the equator, makes it an ideal place for astronomical observation as well as its special and almost poetic touch given by the beauty of the surrounding landscape. At nightfall, we are invited to relax lying on the desert floor looking at the sky, while listening to an interesting and fun talk about astronomy. Then we can see various celestial bodies more closely from the observatory's telescopes and even take incredible photos of them. The talk takes place in a shared service from 7:00 p.m. and lasts approximately 1 hour.

  • Visit to the Paleontological Museum of Villavieja: USD 7

Millions of years ago the Tatacoa Desert was a humid tropical forest until the Eastern Cordillera was formed and changed the course of the waters, which generated the current eroded landscape. For this reason, this is one of the most important paleontological exploration areas in the continent where studies of this type have been carried out for almost a century. The small but interesting Paleontological Museum of Villavieja shows what the Desert was like in prehistoric times, as well as a large collection of fossils of different species of mammals and reptiles.
