NATURE RESERVE “PÁRAMO SANTA INÉS"
Antioquia, Colombia
Duration: 12 hours, including 6 hours hiking
The “Páramo Santa Inés” is part of a fragile Andean ecosystem. The Colombian Páramos are high mountain habitats just above the forest line and below permanent snowline. According to scientists, Páramos may be “evolutionary hot spots” and among the fastest evolving regions existing. They can only be found in the Andean highlands of Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela. This unique ecosystem is responsible for Colombia’s water supply. Its swamp- like soil stores huge amounts of water and give birth to countless small Andean rivers. Due to the remote location, the Páramo Santa Inés conserved great parts of its natural habitat.
