SOUTHWEST- EXCURSION TO THE MAGDALENA STRAIT, A SUGAR MILL, OBANDO AND THE BORDONES WATERFALL
San Agustín, Colombia
Duration: 7-8 hours.
We will visit the Magdalena Strait, the narrowest point that the main river of Colombia exhibits on its way to the ocean and which is surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape of Andean forest. Just a few kilometers from there we find the small town of Obando, where we will see some tombs similar to those of the Tierradentro Archaeological Park in Cauca, as well as a small museum in which pieces, older even than those found in San Agustín, are displayed. The most famous of them is perhaps the "Winged Fish" piece of goldwork, of which a replica is preserved in this museum, since the original was moved to the Gold Museum in Bogotá.
On the way to Obando we will pass by a sugar mill in production, where we can taste freshly made panela and learn a little more about the production of this sweet that is obtained from the juice of sugar cane. Like coffee, panela is one of the most beloved and iconic products of our society and is present in the kitchens of all Colombian homes.
This activity is subject to the operation of the mill: it can be scheduled in advance, but if the mill does not have production on the day of the visit, a shorter demonstration will be held.
We will end the day with a visit to the Salto de Bordones, one of the most impressive waterfalls in Colombia (approx. 400 meters).
