SOUTHWEST- VISIT THE TATACOA DESERT

Tatacoa Desert, Colombia
Duration: 2.5 hours, from Villavieja. During the visit to the spectacular Tatacoa Desert, the second largest arid zone in Colombia after the Guajira Peninsula, we can walk on two trails in the famous parts of this tropical dry forest: The Cuzco part, with a characteristic ocher color that reminds us of the landscapes seen in the cartoon with the adventures of the roadrunner and the coyote, and the Los Hoyos part, where the environment completely shifts to gray tones that produce unique panoramic views. The tour can be carried out in a small tuk-tuk, by car or by bus and on the way, stops are made to take short walks (20 minutes on average) to appreciate the formations originated by water and wind known locally as the cathedrals, the tower, the wishing tree, and the labyrinths, as well as the representative vegetation of this ecosystem

Optional

  • Visit the Astronomical Observatory: USD 14
Due to its geographical conditions, the sky of the Tatacoa Desert is usually very clear most of the year, which together with the absence of light pollution and its proximity to the equator, makes it an ideal place for astronomical observation as well as its special and almost poetic touch given by the beauty of the surrounding landscape. At nightfall, we are invited to relax lying on the desert floor looking at the sky, while listening to an interesting and fun talk about astronomy. Then we can see various celestial bodies more closely from the observatory's telescopes and even take incredible photos of them. The talk takes place in a shared service from 7:00 p.m. and lasts approximately 1 hour.
  • Visit to the Paleontological Museum of Villavieja: USD 7
Millions of years ago the Tatacoa Desert was a humid tropical forest until the Eastern Cordillera was formed and changed the course of the waters, which generated the current eroded landscape. For this reason, this is one of the most important paleontological exploration areas in the continent where studies of this type have been carried out for almost a century. The small but interesting Paleontological Museum of Villavieja shows what the Desert was like in prehistoric times, as well as a large collection of fossils of different species of mammals and reptiles.
