SOUTHWEST- EXCURSION TO THE PURACE NATIONAL PARK

Duration: 8 hours for each option. 12 hours if both options isconbined. There are two options to get to know the Puracé National Park: Option 1 – Visit to the National Park: We will leave Popayán around 8:00 am towards the town of Puracé, just under two hours from the city. There we will be met by a local guide from the indigenous council that administers the services of the area and with whom we will visit the most emblematic sites of the Park: The Andulbio lagoon, the Piedra del Cóndor, where it is common to see the Andean condor, the Valley of the Frailejones, the Bedón waterfall, and we will end with a visit to the San Juan hot springs, a source of natural thermal water that reaches up to 36 ° C (it is not possible to bathe in the source). On this tour there are no long walks, the sites are visited by car and for some, we will have to walk in most cases, about 500 m. We will be back in the city around 4:00 p.m. Option 2 – Ascent to the Puracé Volcano: We will leave Popayán around 6:00 am. towards Pilimbalá, approximately 1.5 hours from the city. There we will continue by car to a sulfur mine at 3,900 m.a.s.l. where we start a hike of approximately 4.5 km and approximately 2 hours to the top of the Puracé Volcano located at 4,650 m.a.s.l. We will walk around the crater of the volcano and if the weather is favorable, we can have a spectacular panoramic view over the Andes from where we can see the Pan de Azúcar volcano and the city of Popayán. Descent and return to the city where we will be around 4:00 pm. It is possible to combine the two options, for which the activity would begin around 4:00 am, starting with the Ascent to the Volcano and the Visit to the National Park after descending. In this itinerary, we don’t visit the Piedra del Cóndor. The estimated time of return to Popayán is around 5:00 pm.

Important

  • Average temperature: 13°C, on the top of the volcano the temperature can drop to 3°C.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes, wear a hat or cap and, sunscreen. For option 2, we recommend hiking boots and warm clothing, gloves and hat, and to take long highly emergetic snacks such as candy, granola bars, chocolate, (grave paste), and water.
  • Suggested schedule: In the morning at 8:00 am for option 1, for option 2, 4:00 am for the tour combining both options
